Modern House Plans Rebell
Against Victorian Style
Modern house plans grew out of a rebellion
to Victorian and overly ornate homes.
Modern architecture evolved and took on a complete new shape
due to the advancements of technology and the availability
of new materials in that era.
Contrary to previous home design modern architecture meshed
with nature. These homes were also called organic architecture
a term used by Frandk Lloyed Wright.
"So here I stand before you preaching organic architecture:
declaring organic architecture to be the modern ideal and the
teaching so much needed if we are to see the whole of life,
and to now serve the whole of life, holding no traditions essential
to the great TRADITION. Nor cherishing any preconceived form
fixing upon us either past, present or future, but instead
exalting the simple laws of common sense or of super-sense
if you prefer determining form by way of the nature of materials..." -
Frank Lloyd Wright, An Organic Architecture, 1939
Modern Homes were built with less formal
structure and more open floor plans. The desire to complement
nature was a key
characteristic. Houses of this era made indoor – outdoor
living a common practice.
Modern house design is primarily known
for the period in the early 1900’s however the term
was widely used and explored during the renaissance.
In the 1900’s American architects
Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright began building houses
with much simpler
designs. Frank Lloyd Wrights Prairie and Craftsman homes are
examples of modern architecture.
Modern architecture is usually characterized by:
• a rejection of historical styles as a source of architectural
form (historicism)
• an adoption of the principle that the materials and functional
requirements determine the result
• an adoption of the machine aesthetic
• a rejection of ornament
•
a simplification of form and elimination of "unnecessary
detail"
• an adoption of expressed structure
• Form follows function
Modern Architecture has been deemed anti-romantic because
of its industrial and simplified style. This is not the case.
The modern architects put all of their emotion into going a
new direction. At times they even faced adversity because of
their idealistic design concepts.
